How do I load a 44 cal Black powder revolver?

Been around guns all my life but not these. Just bought it and don't have any idea what type powder to use, How much . Size ball and caps ect. Help I do know not to use Hopps #9 to clean it.How do I load a 44 cal Black powder revolver?
You can load the revolver with or without wads. If you don't use wads, you'll need to cover the cylinder (after the bullets were seated) with applicable lube (Crisco will do).

Powder charge for a .44 black powder is usually between 19gr to 35gr of FFFg or FFg powder. Generally, speaking, you want enough powder in the cylinder (no air space) AND enough space for bullet and/or wad.

I recommend that you purchase a black powder loading manual such as Lyman's Black Powder Maunal before you fire your revolver.

Colt replicas usually took a .451-454 ball, I used .454-457 on Remington replica, Ruger is advised to use .457 ball. No. 11 caps or small sporting caps on nipples. Bullets- 225 to 250 grain round nose with a narrow step base to load easier in chamber, usually 2 grooves for lube. Powder as noted FF or FFF 20 to 30 grains, my old flask was colt replica at about 24 grains spout. Friend used 35 grains in Dragoon replica. Heard Pyrodex had some 25 grain pellets in .44, need a hot cap though, haven't used it personally. Load powder, thumb seat bullet on mouth of chamber then turn cylinder under loading lever plunger and seat bullet just under cylinder lip. Repeat 4 times to load 5 chambers- safety recommendation is leave one chamber empty under hammer.Grease/lube on front of ball/bullet to chamber mouth end, then put primer caps on nipple, usually with a cap tube but lot of people use thumb seat. If going in field hunting the old practice was drip wax on caps to waterproof, I did mostly target or demonstration and didn't use wax, no miss-fires. Enjoy the smoke.
