ThanksWhat is black powder inside a wall?
Are you near a railway? Is it soot from the steam trains from years back ?What is black powder inside a wall?
craig,

It sounds like a black fungus...I can be dangerous to some folks that inhale it. There's really not much you can do about it short of making sure things like baseboards or corners stay clean or dry. Fungus is usually found when there are warm moist conditions.

good luck
It sounds like mold or mildew. Not that inhaling it is a real good idea, but what does it smell like? If it smells like an old basement, it's probably mildew or mold. If there's any part of the wood that you're planning on leaving behind, you should clean it really well with bleach water.
Could be mold, possibility black mold which is dangerous.
