Why is potassium nitrate the best oxidizing agent for black powder?

In terms of chemistry, why is it the best? Why is potassium nitrate the best oxidizing agent for black powder?
I'm not sure that potassium nitrate really oxidizes any better than sodium nitrate does, but I do know that the reason it's more commonly used is that sodium nitrate is hygroscopic and will absorb the water molecules from air, so they need to stay sealed until ready for use.

Potassium nitrate won't do that, and will remain viable for long periods of time, as long as liquid water isn't added.

I know that isn't exactly what you asked, but I really can't figure how KNO3 would oxidize any better.

Hope it helps -Why is potassium nitrate the best oxidizing agent for black powder?
Lightest metal nitrate that's not too hydrophillic.

(Chlorates are not stable in the presence of sulfur.)
