Age restrictions for black powder revolvers?

I live in Minnesota and was wondering what the age restrictions for cap and ball (black powder) revolvers (think cowboys). Is it the same age as for regular cartridge pistols (21 years)?Age restrictions for black powder revolvers?
I'm not sure, you see the federal government does not see muzzle loaders and cap and ball revolvers as lethal weapons, but if it were up to me, you would have to wait until you were 18 to purchase one, I know that as of now you dont have to go through a backround check, or a waiting period, I would contact your states local gun law makersAge restrictions for black powder revolvers?
Black powder revolvers can be bought at age 18.
I believe it's 18 since it is a muzzle loader. but check your local restrictions first.
Call a gun store and ask.

  • Washer tears our clothes and leaves smelly black streaks/powder?

I have had problems lately with the apartment laundry room washers tearing holes in our clothes and leaving smelly black streaks and black powdery crumbly stuff on or around the tears on the clothes. I thought maybe I was overloading but it happens on small loads too. You can't predict when or which washer will do it. They are high efficiency front loaders, not sure which brand.

What is happening to my clothes? It's a slum complex so complaining or fighting management is useless, I just want to know if there's something I can do while laundering here or if I just have to go to a laundromat or hand wash from now on.

It's tempting anyways since they raised the price after installing these high efficiency things a few years ago, but the washers don't clean well at all (when they actually work in the first place) and the dryers take two cycles to dry now.Washer tears our clothes and leaves smelly black streaks/powder?
Your comment of ';Black crumbly stuff on or around the tears'; is a good starting point. Search the inside of the washer to see if anything is catching the clothes. Is it a front loader then it could be getting caught between the seal and the front glass. If this is indeed the case then since you are paying more because of these new machines there is a case where you should be reinbursed for the damage they have caused.

I hope you have it in writing that the rent was put up because of the new washers!!Washer tears our clothes and leaves smelly black streaks/powder?
Either of these guys could be right, but I' going with the first answer. I believe the dryers are in need of replacement or repair.
I have a front loading Maytag that gets mold around the lip inside the door. My friend is a Maytag repairman and he said that my specific washer had a recall because of this. Unfortunately, we missed the cutoff date to have it repaired/replaced. He said to try using powder sunlight automatic dish detergent and bleach to clean out some of the mold.

It is also possible that someone is washing some kind of nasty work clothes right before you. Maybe a roofer or street worker, Just guessing on this one.
the drum is worn out it now has slack between the drum and washer housing allowing your clothes to get between there also. the black stuff is the old sludge left from years of use like the stuff that is in your sink drain. i would definitely go somewhere else from now on

Most black gunpowder recipes call for three ingredients, only one of which you have listed. All the procedures also list problems of handling the chemicals, especially the difficulty of correctly corning to get the proper size particles. It is not a trivial process.

What exactly is a 'black powder' handgun?

I have, whilst surfing the net, seen sites advertising 'black powder' handguns, which caught my eye as I'm in the UK and yet these seem to be legal, and look either like Wild West revolvers or old pirate-style flintlocks.

Are they legal here? What exactly is 'black powder'- does that mean that the gun does not fire a regular bullet?

ThanksWhat exactly is a 'black powder' handgun?
I'm sure you are talking about muzzleloading pistols such as single shots, 1860 colts 1858 Remington. there are a long list of these available in a wide variety of calibers from .22 to .54 these are also refereed to as cap and ball revolvers. they use black powder for propellant not modern smokeless powder. the powder is measured out, put directly into the cylinder. a lead ball is ran into cylinder. and a cap is put on the nipple. these ';black powder'; handguns are lots of fun to shoot.

i live in the us and cant tell you if they are legal in the uk. i'd check local laws there before purchasingWhat exactly is a 'black powder' handgun?
They are usually muzzle loaders using percussion caps.A particular expertise is needed with these weapons.exponents of these weapons generally mix their own powder which affects the muzzle velocity.
Gun powder packing guns are very basic.. Like the first versions..
Sounds more like a musket type gun to me, where gunpowder is poured into the barrel and the shot is rammed down on top of that.
It`s a gun that fires bullets that use black powder as an accelerant instead of nitro based accelerant.
These are usually the cap and ball revolvers and rifles. Back in 1873 when Colt intoduced the first domestic cartridge handgun, the Colt Single Action Army, the .45 Colt round was loaded with black powder. Smokeless propellent which we use today didn't come along until the 20th century.
I don't know about the legality of them.

The Black powder pistol is a muzzle loaded pistol. Loose black powder poured down the barrel, a clothe wad is then rammed in the barrel, and then the round(a lead or steel ball the size of the barrel) is rammed down the barrel. A primer is placed on the hammer and then you aim and squeeze the trigger. Hold the weapon steady until the primer ignites the powder and firing the round out of the barrel.

Have fun firing this weapon, but use extreme caution as the sparks with fly all over and could ignite any powder laying in the open.
It means that you had to put the gun powder in with a powder horn and then place the steel ball and use this thin steel rod called a ramrod to push the ball down the barrel.

Then, you pulled back the hammer and placed a little more powder on the plate and aligned the flint so when you pull the trigger, the flint will make a spark igniting the powder and discharging the pistol.

What a pain in the bum ,eh?
Black powder guns are one in which the gunpowder and projectile are loaded separately, guns from or like those used in another era that has passed

    Not modern - age weapons

Also, in America, there are special hunting seasons for black powder guns versus modern era rifles %26amp; pistols
Orion 2506 Is exactly on the mark here. You would not use a steel ball as a projectile, and brass or wood ramrods are preferred, so you wont damage the rifling in your barrel.

That's not counting some of the old reproductions, which have a built in ramrod.

And yes, you may load all six chambers, although if carrying for hunting, one chamber was left empty, and the cylinder was rotated to that position, just in case the handgun was dropped, you didn't have an accidental discharge.
Your correct they are legal in the uk we fire them sometimes, its really just powder packing and a piece of shot... in otherwords there is no casing like a regular round, they are more unpredictable and you may get flash backs if all is not well............ we make our own powder but im not telling you how lol
    Cheers:

One of the better places to look is on the attached link...

Most of the repro guns are Italian; Pietta or Uberti. Each port on the cylinder is loaded with powder, [possibly a 'Wonder Wad] lead ball and sealed with 'bore butter'.

My 1858 Remington repro uses .451 dia lead balls- when pressed into the top of the cylinder, a small circle of lead is shaved off, indicating a gas-tight seal between ball and wall.

No- it does not use a regular bullet.

Unsure of UK legality- you are quite restricted over there, but there may be clubs and such... I hope so.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

cheaperthandirt [link] will not ship out of the US. I'll keep looking.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

not a pistol link, but a procedures site...good info.
It's a gun where the gunpowder and bullet are separate. I don't believe any type of gun is legal in the UK, but it could be considered a collector's item.

How do i make a homemade black face powder?

i need a light black face powder and i need to be able to make it easily at home. Something similiar to pressed white powder. preferably not super dark just something to give a slightly blackened look, any ideas?? thnksHow do i make a homemade black face powder?
Try fireplace ash. If you really break it up it will act as a powder. If you use a slightly wet brush to apply the powder it will stick and last much longer. Be careful about using charcoal. The quick lighting kind has lighter fluid in it and that could be dangerous. How do i make a homemade black face powder?
get a bag of kingsford charcoal briquettes and scrape with a knife - charcoal has been used for a long time for halloween makeup or to give a dirty look to the face.... ALSO, if you look in the cosmetics dept at walgreens or your drugstore - you will find tons of black and gray eye shadows that will give you the same looks and affect - some may be flat while others may be metallic and it will cost under 5 bucks.
I haven't tried this before but you could try getting some black eyeshadow and crushing it up and mix it with the white pressed power to make it a bit lighter and to make more of it.
Burn some charcole. It may not be the best smelling but it would probably work. I dont know if that is what you mean by at home. but it would work if you had any in your garage or something.
I agree with everyone else. Just rub some charcoal on your face. Good luck.

You just need to eat right. all these supplements!!! I get so agravated at them. Eat a balanced diet, go to bed at a resonable time. No black powder is going to make you a good football player. That comes from an insatable work ethic and desire never to give up on yourself.Should i use MRI Black Powder foor football games?
Odds are it isnt going to effect you that much during a football game because you will not need to bench 225 pounds or sqaut 315 while you are playing. Also when you drink it you can risk crashing towards the end of the game. I suggest you have the good ol' pregame meal your coach gives you and thats it.

What are some Black powder guns for starters?

Hello everyone, I just researched my states guns regulations and Black Powder guns are legal. I was wondering what are some good older Black powder guns that are good for beginners What are some Black powder guns for starters?
Cabelas has lots of starter kits or if you got one near by just go to one and see fit. for example i was trying to deciede a black powder rifle that would be best for me and i narrowed it down to a hawken traditions precution cap blackpowder rifle. also if you have any questions they can answer most of them. Also Thompson Center has a great starters kit too from what i seen and heard about from my friends whom have muzzle loaded longer than i have. There are many calabers and actions to choose from and for the right job such as the new electronic fire but i don't like it personally but it's good for cracking off a few rounds quicker samthing with the in line models ';T/C muzzle loaders mostly';. If your in to more classy traditional style shooting go for somthing like a flint lock or a precution cap rifle which its fun and looks nice but your reload time is slower and ther is more to clean but it's more simpler which is nice when cleaning anyways. What are some Black powder guns for starters?
I would stick with something like Thompson Center or Knight. Both are great guns. If you prefer a traditional muzzleloader instead of an inline, again Thompson Center makes a great half stock rifle at a reasonable price. DO NOT GET A FLINTLOCK if it is your first muzzleloader. Flintlocks are great guns and I love them but they are not beginner guns. There are just too many things to go wrong and the inexperienced shooter can be really distracted by the flash of teh pan when you fire the gun. Save the flintlock for later. Get a caplock. You can use black powder substitutes such as Pyrodex, Shockey's Gold, Triple 7, etc in a caplock but they will not work wortth a damn in a flintlock. The ignition temperature is too high to be reliably ignited by a flintlock. The advantages to the subsititues is their availability and their ease of cleaning up. They are also less corrosive than black powder.

Contact the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association in Friendship, Indiana to find out if there is a blackpowder club in your area. If there is, go visit them sometime and ask a lot of questions. Blackpowder shooters are always ready to share thier knowlege with a beginner. You will not only find out what you need to buy and what to avoid but you will most likely find several guns for sale. Be careful when visiting any blackpowder club or you will find yourself joining and setting you feet on a path to a lot of fun.
Black-powder guns . . . that's a pretty broad category of weapons. What are you looking for: A rifle, or a pistol? Are you just looking to plink, or are you hoping to hunt with it? Muzzle-loading rifles come in one of two flavors. First are replicas of 19th century percussion-cap sidelock muzzle-loaders, such as the Kentucky rifle, or the Hawken rifle (available from Traditions.) They deliver adequate accuracy and punch to take small to medium game. However, these traditional rifles are limited to equally traditional patched round lead balls, seriously restricting their range.

For the serious black-powder hunter or long-range target shooter are the so-called inline muzzle-loaders, which use a #209 shotgun primer to ignite the powder charge. which is both hotter, and safer to use than fragile and highly sensitive percussion caps. Modern in-line muzzleloaders have a greater selection of bullets than most old 19th century pattern sidelocks. The modern muzzle-loader has access to conical lead bullets resembling bullets going into modern metallic-cartridge firearms. They can also use saboted JHP bullets for even greater versatility. An excellent in-line muzzle-loader is the Thompson-Center Omega.

For pistols, the best choice for the beginner is a single-shot percussion-cap sidelock pistol, such as a replica of the 19th century Kentucky-pattern pistols. A patched, greased lead ball is easier to get down a ten inch barrel than it is a 30 inch barrel, and you have just one charge and one cap to worry about, compared to a percussion-cap revolver. Clean-up is easier too. Black-powder fouling is corrosive, and gets into everything, and the revolver has more gaps and surfaces for it to get into.
If you are wanting to hunt with a muzzleloader and you dont mind using an inline, you cannot beat a Knight for accuracy. I have one, my dad had a thompson encore, He sold his in disgust because I could out shoot him with the Knight all day long. Keep in mind my dad is a much better shot than I am. He shot that much better with the knight as well. They arent that expensive to get started. If you are set on a more traditional front stuffer, I cant help ya. Buy a quality one, and keep it forever. Dont go buy a cheaply made gun just because you are a beginner. You wont be sorry, and you will be happier having one that has a good sales dept and customer service. Many people like the Encores, Im not bashing them, just relating personal experience with one.

Thompson Contenders/Encores come in Black Powder configurations. I understand they are nice guns. I know their smokeless powder versions are top of the line.

  • How does black powder work?

I'm doing a speech on black powder for english class, and was wondering what are the chemical reactions that occurr when black powder is lit, the ingredients are sulfur charcoal and KNO3( potassium nitrate) any other information you have would be helpful thanks! How does black powder work?
Black powder is a mixture of charcoal, saltpetre (KNO3), and sulfur. Black powder is not classified as a high explosive due to the rate of change from solid to gasses. It does not detonate, it deflagerates (burns rapidly). Pyrotechnicians use a formulation of 75% KNO3 15% Charcoal, and 10% sulfur. The best way to mix black powder is using a ball mill. A ball mill is a peice of equipment (looks like a cement mixer) and has either chromium ball bearings or brass bearings (thus because they do not spark when rubbed together) rolling amongst the powders as a crushing media. People sometimes use quarters because they are non sparking also. The reason why it is so effective to ball mill is because the rolling ball bearings in turn press the KNO3 and sulphur into the porous charcoal

Some reactions occurring within the ignition of black powder are:

A simple, commonly cited, chemical equation for the combustion of black powder is:

    2 KNO3 + S + 3 C 鈫?K2S + N2 + 3 CO2. easy understanding as:

    2 mols KNO3 + 1 mol sulfur + 3 mols charcoal =

    1 mol K2S + 1 mol nitrogen + 3 mols carbon dioxide

An interesting fact is the white smoke produced by the reaction is the Potassium Sulfide (K2S) being generated. Thus why the smoke smells like sulfur

A more accurate, but still simplified, equation is

    10 KNO3 + 3 S + 8 C 鈫?2 K2CO3 + 3 K2SO4 + 6 CO2 + 5 N2.

If anything else is needed please feel free to contact me.

How I can use Sodium Chloride in making Black Powder?

I have Sodium Chloride as liquid and I want to use it as oxidizer in making black powder. How I can use Sodium Chloride in making Black Powder?
You can't use sodium chloride, as a liquid or a solid, directly in your powder. Gunpowder and black powder are made using sodium NITRATE.

So, what you'd need to do is take your sodium chloride solution and react it with silver or lead nitrate. That would precipitate silver or lead chloride, leaving sodium ions and nitrate ions in solution.

Now, evaporate the water from the solution to get sodium nitrate crystals, which you would then mix with the other ingredients. How I can use Sodium Chloride in making Black Powder?
you can't, sodium chloride is just plain old table salt
You need potasium cloride I do believe.

Is it possible or feasible to load bird shot or buck shot into a black powder gun?

Yes, you can do it quite safely. In fact, in teh old days, they used to use what whate was called ';buck and ball';. This was a load consisting of both a patched ball and some buckshot. it was a very effective load. Shot loads work best in a smoothbore gun. If you fire it from a rifled gun, you have two probelms. One is the pattern will not be good and the other is that you will have leading in your bore caused when the lead from the shot gets into the rifling causing lead fouling which will have to be scrubbed out.

Here is the way to load your gun with shot. Start by using the same amount of powder as you have been using when shooting a patched ball. Pour this amount of powder down the bore, place a piece of wadding on top of the powder. The old timers used waspnest and claimed it was the best thing to use. Just be sure to harvest your waspnest material from abandoned waspnests. Once you have seated a piece of waspnest on your powder, pour the same volume of shot as the amount of powder that you used. Just use your powder measure to measure your shot. Place another piece of waspnest on top of the shot and you are ready to fire. If you do not have any waspnest handy, you can just use some wadded newspaper instead.

After you are through shooting, you will need to pay special attention to cleaning the lead out of the rifling in your bore (if you were shooting a gun with a rifled bore). If your gun was a smoothbore, you should have no lead fouling to speak of.Is it possible or feasible to load bird shot or buck shot into a black powder gun?
Yes, they make black powder shotguns specifically for birdshot.

The old original black powder guns were smoothbore, and they loaded them whith whatever was handy and available (the blunderbus)

More modern blackpowder RIFLES have a twisted rifling machined in the barrel to provide a spiral or ';spin'; to the bullet as it is leaving the barrel. You could certainly load a blackpowder RIFLE with bird or buckshot, but it could possibly harm the rifling inside the barrel. I'd suggest only using a smoothbore blackpowder SHOTGUN for bird and buckshot. Is it possible or feasible to load bird shot or buck shot into a black powder gun?
Somewhere in my mothers china cabinet is my grandfathers shot dipper. He had a blackpowder double barrel shotgun, and used the dipper for measuring loads to pour down the barrel. So yes, it's not only possible, but it's something that's been done for over 100 years!
Definitely possible and feasible. Until paper cartridges came about, that was what they did. Be careful at first until you figure out a load that will work well for you. Also, make sure that it is not a rifled barrel

If it weren't most of the hunters in history would have been in trouble. It's only been a little over a century, after all, that we've had smokeless propellants.

101, I don't recommend a black powder but rather a dark brown - it doesn't look a harsh on the face as black does. If you want it darker, put it on wet. My choice is aularale.com/7002's brush on brow.
try a brow pencil or even an eyebrow kit!! black may be a bit too harsh...stick to a dark brown!

Searching for an easily-obtainable black powder substitute?

I currently reside in the UK, and am not eligible to purchase black powder, due to age restrictions implemented in my constituency (15), and pondered the thought of obtaining a substance that possess similar properties in order to commence with my incomplete experiment.

If you have any knowledge of where a substitute can be purchased, please specify (preferably a well-known supermarket), otherwise I will be forced to trade online for it.Searching for an easily-obtainable black powder substitute?
Purchasing or trying to purchase black powder or other explosives is illegal for most people in the UK. Causing explosions certainly is!

Quite apart from that, if you have to ask the question, you almost certainly are not fully aware of the dangers and safety precautions, and might join the many others I've known over the years who have ended up minus fingers or a hand or worse. Other sources of things like sulphur are not always suitable for making what you want and may even bring unexpected hazards.

What year is this black powder cap and ball gun from Richland Arms Co 0139 stamped on barrel?

Your Richland Arms Company Reproduction Cap %26amp; Ball Revolver was imported/distributed by Richland Arms Company, Blissfield, Michigan 49228. They went out of business in 1986..Your Revolver was manufactured either in Spain or Italy as Richland had sole U.S. distrubution rights for reproduction guns made in BOTH countries..There are no company records available at this point to do further research on the company or their respective gun values. What year is this black powder cap and ball gun from Richland Arms Co 0139 stamped on barrel?
They were sold probably in the 1980s. If you look real hard, maybe under the grips you will probaly find the letters ASM somewhere.

That's the kiss of death so to speak, it's Armi San Marcos and they made really cheap black powder revolvers copied on Old West classics. Made in Italy and they either went out of business or they were sued to death. Richland is just the company that imported and sold them here in the US.

Value depends on how pretty it is and the classic model it's supposed to look like. Shiny gold plating, scroll work, etc. will be worth more, maybe even a few hundred. A plain jane maybe a hundred. If you took it to a gun show, expect offers like $75.

Sorry, can't retire just yet. But you have a cool looking revolver.

MRI Black Powder- read the label, if you are under 18 then don't use it, because the way you are thinking right now. Since you ';believe'; that you don't feel sore, it is just a placebo effect. If you do go and workout those same muscles you just worked out today you will actually reverse the process and then break down your muscles.

Disposing of old black powder, shells, and a fireworks igniter.?

Basically, I'm looking for a way to get rid of a box of black powder and ammunition that we have had in our home for quite awhile. They are stored in dark, cool places right now and are not at risk of igniting, but we prefer to get rid of them to avoid the risk of setting them off later. Any ideas?Disposing of old black powder, shells, and a fireworks igniter.?
Open the black powder and pour water in the container. It will never ignite or burn after that. Go to your local Police or Sheriff's Department with the old ammo. They will dispose it for you (and no,,,you wont be in trouble for it,,,they will probably compliment you for bringing it in rather than dumping them somewhere). I hope this helps you.Disposing of old black powder, shells, and a fireworks igniter.?
the black powder will be fine to bury in the yard

as soon as it gets wet it is just thick mud and can not burn

the shells you can give to the sheriffs or local police and they will destroy for you and they never ask questions

the black powder is also pretty cool to watch as it sparkles in a camp fire tossed in a little pinch at a time
just spread the black powder in to the weeds or grass,

the shells, see if there is some one you know that hunts give them away,

fire works ignite, if its a spud just throw them in the trash,
Pop them in a box and take them down to your local recycle centre where they will put it into hazardous waste. Or go into a big field you own and set light to it all. Haharr!

that last bit was of course a joke, setting light to ammo is a very childish thing to do and your friends and teachers won't like or respect you if you do. so don't.
give them to the fire or police dept. they can use them for training

It has a smell, but I can't really describe it. I did some research...could it be marijuana resin or black tar herion (we live in Mexico)? Anybody know? ThanksBlack powder?

Is a concealed carry permit required for a black powder cap and ball revolver in montana?

Yes. Montana law prohibits people from carrying concealed weapons inside city, town or logging camp limits and also contains some limits on carrying concealed weapons outside of city limits. However, a person may carry concealed weapons in many instances if he or she has a valid permit. You may not carry a concealed weapon in buildings owned or leased by the federal, state or local government; in financial institutions; or any place where alcoholic beverages are sold, dispensed and consumed. Montana Code list potential concealed weapon as dirk, dagger, pistol, revolver, slingshot, sword cane, billy, knuckles made of any metal or hard substance, knife having a blade 4 inches long or longer, razor, not including a safety razor, or other deadly weapon. However, it should be noted that unconcealed weapons are acceptable in many cases and that Montana has no prohibitions against carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle. Is a concealed carry permit required for a black powder cap and ball revolver in montana?
It depends on whether you carry it cncealed or not. If you carry it out in the open on your hip, and your coat doesn't obscure it from view, then no. Most western states, except California allow the open carrying of firearms, but you should check local ordnances for their laws, to be safe. Now, if you carry it concealed in any way (if, for instance, you have it in a western holster, but you wear a long coat that completely obscures it from view) then you will probably need to get a permit. Personally, I think that, while it is a fine man-stopper compared to nothing at all, if you are going to go through the trouble of getting a permit, then get a modern cartridge firearm. I have a couple cap and ball revolvers, and they are great fun to shoot, but not very efficient. Is a concealed carry permit required for a black powder cap and ball revolver in montana?
Yes! Even though they are not considered a firearm by the ffa, neither is a axe or a sword, although I'm not exactly sure what kina' liscence you'll be needing!
Why would you wanna carry a smokewagon, concealed, or otherwise, unless you're playing 'cowboys'? ! !

Unless you're a disqualified criminal, get yourself a modern weapon and a CWP, before you get yourself in trouble.

It ain't that big a deal!
I believe it is required in every state to carry a concealed firearm, reguardless of whether it is blackpowder.

It is comprised of charcoal, potassium nitrate, and sulfur. It is a simple mixture with optimum proportions. However, the particle size is a critical factor if you're making it to use.

I think that if you're making it for legal purposes, it is legal to make your own in small quantities. However, if your making it for other nefarious puposes it is illegal.

They use to use flash powder in packets to go with cameras to make the flash before the flashed were invented. What is the deference between black powder and flash powder regarding the power, detonation velocity and stabi?
Flash powder is a lot harder to make and it is a lot more volatile than normal black powder. I do not suggest using or handling flash powder unless you have someone there who really knows what they're doing, flash powder is extremely dangerous.

It's a lot easier to ignite flash powder than black powder, even static electricity can ignite it, so be really careful.

It also has more power than standard black powder and as it's name suggests it makes really bright flashes when detonated.

    I hope that helped. =)

im not putting down black powder rifels. but modern day rifles are much more effcent. What do people still find appealing about Black powder rifles?
Ive notice that the older I get the more respect I have for our history. Shooting a black powder rifle or handgun is just plain fun. Why do people like old cars, collect old pop or beer cans and bottles? When twenty years passes, and you find something you wrote from 20+ years ago, do you find it interesting to read, and think about what you were doing then.

We live in a time when we can buy all of our food at the store so when do we still hunt?

Its all a love of History. A way to remember our past.

I cant wait till I can afford the flint lock rifle Ive been wanting and share that experience with me 10 year old daughter. What do people still find appealing about Black powder rifles?
its nostalgia and history. When it comes to black powder efficiency isn't exactly the point. maybe its hard to explain.
I own 1 black powder 50cal, 1 compound bow and well over 100 modern rifles. The only reason for the black powder or compound bow is I can hunt deer from October until the end of February in Arkansas.
I think its just the old time feel of it.
my husband owns a black powder, and lots of MODERN rifles too, I think its just because of heritage, and heck it is a gun, and most gun people feel like they are all equally good, and the more the better. Take from me I live in Ky, and my family (dad, brothers, uncles, .....) could start a gun shop with all the rifles they own. Its a competition he who has the most is the biggest MAN lol.
the reason i find them appealing is by using one i extend my deer hunting season. ever heard of black powder only season?
For the same reason people like Milfs %26amp; hemi 'Cudas. Something new, is not always as fun.....
That depends on how you define (and spell!) efficiency. You don't have to worry about the bullet from the old smokepole blowing up and causing a surface wound because its velocity is too high. There's considerable nostalgia involved, sure, but a BPCR will hold its own in almost any situation against its modern equivalent if the hunter does his part. Of course, a lot of youngsters prefer murdering animals at long range to actually hunting them, but that transition will usually come with maturity.
It's really an experiential circumstance- if you know someone who owns such a weapon, ask if you can go along the next time to the range. It's fun, and you may gain some respect for how people survived in the day.
You get an extra hunting season in most places. So you have extra time to bag that record book buck. Not to mention the modern black powder rifles are very, very effictive weapons, The TC Omega is good out to 200yds with a .50 round. I'd say that's pretty good. That and its really cool to have to fan the smoke away to see if your game is down. :)
I am in Maryland and the laws are totally different for black powder versus modern guns and that makes it far more enjoyable to use black powder. For deer:our modern gun season is only 2 weeks in November. The black powder season runs a few months. Also, many hunters I know realize that due to the terrain, thinkness of vegetation etc if you miss with your first shot whether in modern or powder you probably won't get a second shot. Plus, many times you don't have opportunities where you want to try to take a shot that is very long so the black powder makes more sense for hunting. Although all the powder guys I knew also owned modern rifles for fun at the range.
For giggles, once; I loaded up a bunch of black powder .45LC rounds for my Vaquero. I wanted to find out if there was any real difference between my modern cowboy load of about 800 fps. Not having much experience with black powder I managed to exceed my modern load by about 100 fps. Recoil with the modern load was always a gentle push, with the black powder it was a pronounced shove. Report with the modern load was a sharp crack, with black powder it was a louder KABOOM. No smoke from the modern load, but after three rounds of black powder, I could not see my target.

Shooting black powder is just plain fun. I just finished loading up a few shot gun rounds, I going to the range with my Coach Gun just to screw with my skeet shooting buddies.

As far as ';efficient'; goes, it depends on just what you mean. Yes, it takes less modern powder to shoot higher velocity than black powder. Longer ranges are more possible as well. but black powder does not take a back seat to accuracy. Go to a ';Quigley Match'; some time and watch some of shooters, with a single shot Sharps Rifle (many using black powder), hit targets out to a 1,000 yards.
In my opinion, it is all about traditional hunting methods. Believe me, I am not putting down black powder rifles either. I have a modern day in-line .50 cal and I haven't shot it in over 4 years. I give credit to those people who go out and hunt with those old hawken rifles, it is very tough.
Some states have a special hunting season that you can only use Black powder rifles, for example I live in Pa and for two weeks after Christmas you could hunt deer with a flint lock.
It's not about efficiency. It's about heritage and challenge and skill. Anyone can shoot game with a modern rifle, it takes a much higher level of hunting skill to hunt with a black powder rifle than a modern rifle, and be successful. Our country and ancestors survived using these weapons . They provided food for their families and defended their rights. They did it using these primitive weapons without the benefit of modern weapons and accessories.

I have a real french black powder pistol from the 1700s, about how much is it worth?

It is in great condition.I have a real french black powder pistol from the 1700s, about how much is it worth?
Value is going to be totally dependent on what a collector figures the actual condition to be. Very often, buyer and seller will disagree on the definition of actual condition, which can make a big difference in the actual value of the gun. Plus, there鈥檚 a lot more that needs to be known about your specific gun before a fair market value can be determined.

Placing an accurate value on collector鈥檚 guns in today鈥檚 market is very difficult. Gun prices are generally rising, overall, and the Blue Book values are lagging behind the market by at least six months. To get a more realistic view of current prices, check out www.gunbroker.com, www.auctionarms.com, and www.gunsamerica.com to see what鈥檚 selling. Keep in mind that what you see there is asking prices, and not actually what the firearms selling for, but it will give you some ideas.

Your 1700s pistol is probably worth some decent bucks, and therefore worth the cost of a reliable appraisal. Check out http://www.gun-appraisals.com. This is a link to an online appraisal service that is fast, reasonably priced, and reliable. I have used them several times in the recent past, and always been happy with their service and results. Starting at $10, their appraisal would be a good step to take in placing a value on your pistol.

I have a real french black powder pistol from the 1700s, about how much is it worth?
You will need to provide a great deal more information before any estimate would be possible. Values for this type of guns run from the 300 dollar range to many thousands.

You could start your search by taking it to some of your local gun shops, someone may have enough experience to give you at least a reasonable starting point.
what ever you do DON'T take the first estimate use that one as a bench mark and get other estimates you may find a better price or not

and if not go back to the first offer and sell to him
Depends on maker, style, caliber and rarity. More information is needed.

black powder is wierd. The muzzle loading black powder guns are not regulated the same way as cartridge fed firearms. Some states, counties and cities do still require registration. Sometimes the retailer will have their own policy regarding age. A Cabela's store I go to requires the purchaser is 21 or older, other stores state 18 or older. Most stores say age 18 to purchase cans of black powder, while others require 21.

You will probably have to check your city, county and possibly state laws to make sure if it is 18. Then find a retailer that honors 18 instead of quoting 21 on their own accord.

What's the difference between black powder and smokeless powder?

the answer is long and technical so I will give you some links you can read

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokeless_p鈥?/a>

hate giving you links instead of answering your question

as said before the answer is long and I don't want to mislead youWhat's the difference between black powder and smokeless powder?
Black powder is the old charcoal, sulfur, saltpeter mix that the Chinese invented a thousand years ago. It's common ';gunpowder';. It burns badly and creates huge amounts of smoke.

Smokeless powder is based on the explosive capabilities of certain organic compounds called ';nitrocellulose';. In its easiest form, it's cotton (cellulose) that's been treated with nitric and sulfuric acids to create what's known as ';guncotton';. It's an explosive by itself....but add a tiny bit of nitroglycerine to that and you get a mean propellant that's easily formed into grains and safe to handle. Very little smoke.

Response to the unnamed fellow below:

Black powder, when burned, only produces propellant gases with approx 35% of it's mass. 65% of the mass of black powder, when burned, becomes useless solid byproducts in the gun barrel and in the air. If that's not ';burns badly'; in your opinion, perhaps you need to go back to the third grade again, bud? Your comprehensive skills are obviously lacking. What's the difference between black powder and smokeless powder?
Black powder is composed of charcoal, sulfur and potassium nitrate. It burns rapidly at a linear rate regardless of the pressure but produces less maximum pressure than does modern smokless powder. and, yes, it does produce clouds of smoke when it is used as a gun powder.

Smokeless powder is composed of two basic materials. One is nitrocellulose and the other is nitroglycerine. Some smokeless powders are made of only one of these materials and is called a single base powder. Others are composed of a mixture of both components and are called double based powders. The reasosn for using mixtures of the two components is to control their burning rates. Faster burning powders are used for shotguns and handguns. The slower burning powders are used for rifle powders.

Smokeless powders are all progressive burning powders. That means that as the pressure within the cartridge increases, so does the burning rate. It produces a more gentle acceleration than does black powder and achieved much greater final pressures and higher total velocities than will blackpowder. Blackpowder burns at the same rate regardless of the increasing pressure. The maximum pressure is reached more quickly but is significalntly less than smokeless powder. These lower total pressures of black powder are the reason that you cannot use smokeless powder in a gun designed for black powder. You will blow it up and yourself along with it.

As for the comparative cleanleness of the two types of powder, black powder leaves MUCH more residue than does smokeless powder. In addition, when the sulfur and potassium nitrate burn they form sulfuric acid and nitric acid which are very corrosive to metal. Black powder residue must be completely removed from your gun as soon as you are through shooting for the day to keep the gun from rusting away. Smokeless powdeer does not have this problem and immediate cleaning is not an issue as long as you don't have any old or foreign cartridges with smokeless powder but a corrosive primer. If you have a cartridge with a corrosive primer, you have to clean immediately.
    quote:

Black powder is the old charcoal, sulfur, saltpeter mix that the Chinese invented a thousand years ago. It's common ';gunpowder';. It burns badly and creates huge amounts of smoke.

My father once told me that if you don't know what your talking about......DON'T.

There is NO ';smokeless'; powder on the market today that burns as uniformly as black powder. However it was developed by the Chinese and it does create large amounts of smoke.

The main difference between black powder and modern is guns you have to clean every time you shoot them, and those you don't. There are a myriad of other dynamics that factor into which discipline you might want to get into, but do not think for an instant that black powder is inferior simply because of its origin.
    Smoke
short answer. black powder is a mechanical mixture of ingredients and is classified as an explosive. ';smokeless'; powder is a chemical combination and it considered a flamable solid
You are asking a question that has a long, complicated answer. So I will give you the best short answer. Black powder (the ';original propellant';) is very pressure sensitive, produces a lot of smoke when ignited, and is not very efficient (meaning it takes a lot more to produce the gas to propel a slug). Smokeless powder burns cleaner (produces more gas to drive a bullet than just smoke), is pressure sensitive, and very efficient (meaning it takes a lot less grains to do the job). Smokeless is much safer to use than black powder and produces better results. But it is also more complex chemically. Because of this guns using smokeless propellant must have petroleum based products utilized for proper cleaning. Soap and water will not remove the chemical compounds (with the exception of corrosive salts made by old primers used during the first half of the 20th century-but that is a special case). Black powder is more organic and soap and water (with a followup of animal/vegetable lard) will do the trick. Water, soap, and lard were very commonly used back in the 19th century for gun care before smokeless came around. I do not have the time to construct a better answer I have a link to a more sophisticated answer. You will notice that I did not ';copy'; my answer from this link but want you to read it for chemical composition info.
the black powder burns differently than the smokeless the smokeless burns hotter
Lots of things, the two are hardly comparable other than that they both can be used to propel projectiles; the basic differences are:

    Chemcial composition

    Burn Rate

Byproducts of combustion (smoke and debris)

    Pressure curve

Size and density of pieces of powder

    Intended Purpose

Keep in mind that smokeless powder should never be used in any black powder gun. Black powder may be used in guns developed for smokeless powder, but you must clean the gun after every use and do not use petroleum based solvents - they form a tar when they combine with residue from burnt black powder.

Can I put regular bullets in a black powder pistol?

Are you talking about bullets (the piece that shoots out the muzzle) or cartridges? Loading a modern, smokeless powder cartridge into a gun designed for black powder is extremely unsafe. Smokeless powder generates much higher pressures then black powder guns are designed to take.

Stick to the ammunition the gun was designed for. You'll live a longer and healthier life for it.Can I put regular bullets in a black powder pistol?
In a modern BP gun, AS MANUFACTURED, NO.

When cartridge pistols were first developed, they used BP IN the cartridge, not the more modern smokeless powder.

Some ';conversions'; were made to existing BP guns so they could use a metallic cartridge. AFTER conversion, they could NOT fire anything else! (It required modifying the cylinder and hammer.)

Regarding the use of ';sabot'; bullets; do NOT use them in pistols. The ';jump'; from the cylinder to the barrel could cause the sabot to catch and jam on entry to the barrel, causing severe weapon damage and/or injury to you or bystanders possibly even blowing up the cylinder or causing a ';chain fire'; problem.

(I do NOT use sabot bullets in ANY weapon, modern or BP; but then I have weapons in a variety of calibers, and therefore can use the right weapon for the job!!)

Have fun and shoot safely. Can I put regular bullets in a black powder pistol?
Yes you can buy a conversion cylinder for black powder revolvers so that they will accept centerfire cartridges. I did a conversion to an 1851 colt Navy repro. for .22LR. I am a machinist as some of you may know, and made up a cylinder out of 4140 stock, and a transfer bar. I installed a liner, and it's pretty damn accurate. I would love to get pics up, but unfortunately I suck with a computer (It was enough of a challenge to get on here... ha ha...). Modern BP reproductions are pretty tough guns, you can't Kb (Kaboom) them with black powder. The conversion cylinders are extremely pricey though, it's at a minimum of $250 just for the conversion. For a loading gate, ejector, and cylinder, expect to get into the $500-$600 range, including the price of the gun. I love being a machinist!
Where has everybody been the last 20 years. You can buy sabots for a smaller caliber and shoot just about any bullet. I typed in ';black powder sabots'; and found 29,100 references.

You would have to use a sabot, because regular bullets are not the same size as lead balls.

Most are for rifles, but there are some for large caliber pistols.
Maybe, it depends on which gun you have. Here's an example: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?pr鈥?/a> Just search on MidwayUSA for ';conversion cylinder';.

There is no other good way. Modern smokeless powder develops higher pressures, so it is not safe to shoot it in blackpowder guns. (Maybe, just maybe you could do it if you only used a very small amount of powder, but it still isn't a good idea.)
No. If you look at the rear of the black powder cylinder you will find it is solid, except for the primer hole.

You can load black powder into a modern brass case and fire it out of a revolver like a Ruger Vaquero.
yes, but you would have to by a conversion kit and I have seen them in some magazines, but you'll have to hand load and use only black powder as modern powder would cause the cylander to burst!
You mean instead of a ball use a Conical or bullet? I would only use what is designed for the gun.Conical Black Powder Pistol Bullet sure....
The bullets themselves can not be used because you must use only pure lead projectiles in all BP weapons, unless you are using a load with a sabot. No jacketed bullets are compatible otherwise.
    In a manner of speaking...yes.

For several replica cap and ball pistols, there are conversion cylinders that allow you to use lower-powered [SASS or cowboy load] rounds.

    Look up Kirst Konverters.
NO WAY! well u could if ur looking to blow up the gun!

What else should I take with MRI Black Powder?

Well, it'll certainly give you a kick start what with the nitric oxide and caffeine. Taken late in the day, might keep you

awake all night. Sure looks expensive tho.

Is it legal to have a black powder gun in New York City?

I would like to know if there is a difference in carrying it on your person, auto ETC.Is it legal to have a black powder gun in New York City?
You can own and collect black powder guns. They are sold under Curio and Antique licenses. The problem is that as soon as you own the powder, ball and percussion caps ( even with the weapon NOT loaded), it is considered a deadly weapon.

Same thing for carrying on your person or in a vehicle. It is legal to collect. Keep it in the house only. Take it outside with NO items to load and it is considered possession of a dangerous weapon ( which is also a felony).

  • To put on muscle should I take a preworkout (black powder) and a cheap creatine mono or just sizeon?

Looking for something very effective and easy on the wallet..will be purchasing supplements at gncTo put on muscle should I take a preworkout (black powder) and a cheap creatine mono or just sizeon?
Really depends on what you want.

A preworkout supplement (like Black Powder or Superpump 250) is a mix of stimulants (caffeine/taurine), some creatine and arginine (precusor to nitic oxide, dilates peripheral blood vessels). The general idea is to allow you to work harder and be more focused during your workout. The harder you work, the more you develop. Not good for someone who has a problem with stimulants or a generally weak stomach.

Creatine, in theory, gives you a little extra energy during your workouts. It's cheap (try the weber naturals), just about all brands are the same and is fairly well regarded. That being said, it makes some people nauseous and some people (especially those who eat a lot of red meat) find it doesn't do anything. By far the most easy on the wallet. Costs less per tub, and you take much less daily.

SizeOn is a recovery drink, designed mostly to replace all the little things you burn up while working out, plus a few extras to supposedly enhance repair and growth. Again, contains creatine among other things. Similar cons to a preworkout mix, but since you arn't working out after taking it less people find it to cause discomfort.

None of these will have a huge effect on muscle growth, assuming you have a good diet, but they can help a little. Creatine is a good start and one of the main components of both of the others. My personal favourite is the preworkout mix. I tend to do longer full body workouts, rather than short split routines. You get about 30-40 servings for a pre/post mix tub, at about 50-80 bucks a tub.To put on muscle should I take a preworkout (black powder) and a cheap creatine mono or just sizeon?
Nothing. It is easy on the wallet and is the only thing you need.

Putting on muscle only requires working out, supplements do nothing. Save your money or spend it on food like milk, eggs, veggies, meat instead of supplements.
    three words. Eggs, Eggs, Eggs.

    Drink orange juice after workout.

How to fit a .45 conversion cylinder to a Ruger Old Army black powder?

Take it to a gun smith.

First he needs to check the gun to make sure it can handle the loads. A gun designed to shoot black powder may not be able to handle modern nitrate based powders found in cartridges. If your gun has a brass frame, forget it. If he says it can be done, the you got the issue of actually installing the cylinder.

It is not just a case of removing one cylinder and sticking in another, contrary to what the advertisements say. You have to ensure the gap between the cylinder and forcing cone on the barrel is correct. You have to regulate the cylinder, meaning when you c.o.c.k the hammer the next firing chamber must line up exactly with the barrel. This must be done for all six otherwise if one does not line up, too much of the bullet will ';miss'; the forcing cone and the gun could blow up in your hand. The drop in units go on the assumption that all the Rugers are exactly the same in measurements.

Also, just how are you planning on ejecting the cartridges? Take a look at the design of the conversion units. You will have to take it out of the gun, remove the back, remove the cartridges, reload, put the back back on, put it back into the gun. All giving rise to the potential of doing something wrong and/or causing damage to either the frame, firing mechanism or cylinder. A speedy system it is not.

There are also the legal ramifications. A black powder gun built according to a design of the 1800s does not have the same limits set by law as does a modern cartridge revolver. In some locations a black powder gun is considered an ';antique'; even if recently built and you do not have to register the gun. But if you convert it, suddenly it is a ';modern'; gun and you have to register it. You also may be taking a gun that is legal under the black powder laws and making a gun that may not be legal under the cartridge laws. A gunsmith in your area would know the proper way to legally convert the gun and what paper work is needed.

Lastly, the liability ramifications. If you modify the gun, Ruger will not stand behind its product. Will the company that supplied the cartridge cylinder? Or will they claim in small print that it has to be installed by a gunsmith? If you install it yourself, are you willing to accept full responsibility for someone getting hurt as a result of your conversion?

Considering all issues, it would be far cheaper for you to sell the gun to someone who wants a black powder gun and then go out and buy a new cartridge gun to your liking. Or take the money you were going to spend on the conversion and go buy a new gun. There is no law (yet) that says you can only have one gun.

Consider your guns as a collection. Gun collecting is almost as much fun as shooting. You got a cap and ball revolver. Get a new revolver showing the next step in the evolution of guns, like a Colt Peacemaker or a Ruger Blackhawk. After that get a quality double action revolver like a Ruger Redhawk or Smith and Wesson.

(I am partial to Rugers. They are built quite a bit tougher than the Smith and Wessons.)How to fit a .45 conversion cylinder to a Ruger Old Army black powder?
The Ruger Old Army never came brass, so that shows off the bat what you know about the subject. The Taylor cylinder is wonderful, ready to run out of the box. If there is a problem, send the gun and cylinder to Taylor's and they will fit one for you at no charge. Could not be easier.

The ATF has d Report Abuse
How to fit a .45 conversion cylinder to a Ruger Old Army black powder?
The ATF has declared this to be an antique, as cartridge conversions were common after 1865, and this is a replica of one of the types of conversions. This is why they say to fire black powder loads, as black powder loads are not readily commercially available, as per ATF ruling. Report Abuse

Taylors includes a letter from the ATF o.k.ing the conversion. I wish people would think before they open there mouths or keyboards. Bad info will hurt us all. Especially in the shooting sports.

You have to be quite knowledgeable about revolvers to do that. The hand and cylinder rotation notches would have to set right just for starters. Such a conversion is way beyond the ability of an average tinkerer. It may not even be possible for a pro, without extensive milling and machine work.
There are drop-in cylinders that require little or no gunsmithing. Google Kirst Kartridge Konverter, the site will tell you where they sell them. They go for about $250 per, but if that is the way you want to go, they are the cheapest and easiest I've seen.
Depending on who you are getting the cylinder from, fitting it properly may require the services of a gunsmith.
I bought 'R%26amp;D' brand conversion cylinders from MidwayUSA for both of my Old Army's, and they were simple 'drop-ins', requiring no fitting and they both worked GREAT first time out!
It is not wise to discuss such subjects on here.

How much of a difference in trajectory is there between a black powder ball and bullet?

With a 1:66 ratio you will have to use patched round ball. That is a very slow twist, 1 revolution in 66in, and a conical bullet will not stabilize in that rate of twist. Perfect for patched round ball though. How much of a difference in trajectory is there between a black powder ball and bullet?
The difference can be guesstimated if you can find the trajectory formula that includes sectional density. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it has to do with the bullet weight vs. the diameter and length. Many of your rifle re-loading manuals explain this better than I ever could. I'm partial to the Lyman Reloading manuals and they may have one specifically for black powder.

I had a Hawkens for about 4 years and loved it. My only beef with it was the sights that came with it, so i put on some California sights and everything was made better. The only reason I sold it is because I finally finished making my own and needed the money. Good luck to ya!
I bought a remington genesis this fall. It was under 200$. Right out of the box it was extremely accurate. Mine is a 50 cal. I bought it a cabela's

Are gunpowder and black powder the same thing?

Are gunpowder and black powder the same thing, or are there a few nuances between them? Are gunpowder and black powder the same thing?
The original gun powder was black powder.

Black powder is the mixutre of sulfur, carbon, and potassium nitrate. This was the powder used for guns a long time.

In recent history, they replaced potassium nitrate with potassium chlorate because it burns at a much higher temperature, allowing for a more impressive explosion. So, modern gun powder is not black powder. Are gunpowder and black powder the same thing?
Black powder is gunpowder. What you mean to ask is what is the difference between black powder and modern smokeless powder? Black powder is a mixture of 3 substances that one person already said in an answer.

Modern smokeless powder is nitro cellulose. It is nitroglycerin that is combined with something to make it stable.
No they are not. Black powder is one formulation of what we call gunpowder. There are other formulations that work.
    depends what you what.

    Black Powder

Black powder can only be bought and stored if you have an Explosives Certificate and a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) ';Recipient Competent Authority Transfer Document'; (these are free at present but must be applied for on forms obtainable from the police - Pyrodex (a black powder substitute) can be obtained without any certification. You may only store a maximum of 30 kilos of powder but as it is relatively expensive, doesn't have an indefinite shelf life and is potentially dangerous, this shouldn't worry you at all. It is worth bearing in mind however that the 30 Kg total would also include any powder in loaded rounds and/or shotgun cartridges and even in primers!
