Can you clean a black powder rifle with common powder solvent?

You can clean it with any gun cleaning solvent, but you can do just as good a job with soap and water. Can you clean a black powder rifle with common powder solvent?
You can. You shouldn't. You want to at least neutralize the corrosive black powder residue with hot soapy water before using regular solvent.

You're going to dry it and oil it later so it won't rust.

Balistol is a great cleaner/lubricant for black powder. It smells like stinky feet, but works well. Can you clean a black powder rifle with common powder solvent?
akluis is correct, modern solvents used with black powder actually promotes rust!
no.

Modern gun cleaning chemicals were designed because smokeless powder residue is hard to clean off, but those same chemicals can react badly with blackpowder

Old black powder residue you can actually clean off just fine with soap and water. Some old timers used vinegar...and bear grease for lubricant. (Heck some old timers would clean their guns by pissing down the barrel and that's the only cleaning the gun would get)

black powder is an entirely different beast. You are best off in investing in specific cleaners for the gun, specific lube for the gun, and a few specialty cleaning products like nipple cleaners.
